AI favors pattern completion
That is why a model can sound smart while still missing the sharp edge. It completes the pattern you hand it. If the prompt contains no tension, no weird constraint, and no real user pain, the output stays clean and forgettable.
You can see this in social content. Marketers using generic prompts get hooks that sound like every second LinkedIn post. Founders using generic prompts get apps that look like thinner versions of tools that already exist.
How to break the pattern
Change the input shape first. Give the model a narrow problem, a strange limit, and one uncomfortable fact. Ask for ideas for dentists who lose patients after expensive treatment plans. Ask for concepts that need no push notifications. Ask for offers that help a freelance videographer raise prices without new software.
Then switch from prompting to thinking techniques. Reverse thinking works well because it reveals hidden assumptions. Ask, "How would I guarantee a boring idea here?" The list usually includes copying the top player, naming the same audience, and using the same monetization.
Sameness usually starts before the model answers. It starts in the question.
Three techniques that create distance from average output
Use forced connections. Pair your problem with a domain that has different constraints. A meal-planning founder can study airline boarding, museum membership, or Duolingo streaks. The point is not to copy those products. The point is to import a structure the category has not used.
Use SCAMPER. A creator building a course can substitute live critiques for static modules, combine community with office hours, adapt auction mechanics to limited review slots, modify lesson order, or remove video entirely and teach by annotated examples.
Use first principles. Tesla pushed battery economics by asking what cells are made of and what each input costs instead of accepting the market price of a battery pack as fixed. That kind of question drags thinking away from polished imitation.
A prompt stack that works better
Start with raw material, not requests. Paste user complaints, sales calls, churn reasons, screenshots, and purchase objections. Ask the model to sort them by tension, frequency, and money at stake.
Next, ask for contradictions. Which complaints point in opposite directions. Which users want speed and which want control. Which jobs feel expensive because people fear a bad outcome, not because the task takes long.
Only after that should you ask for ideas. You will still see familiar shapes, but the better ideas arrive because the context now contains friction instead of empty space.
What to do after the model answers
Score each idea on two axes: surprise and usefulness. If an idea scores high on usefulness and low on surprise, run one more thinking pass before you build. If it scores high on surprise and low on usefulness, narrow the user and try again.

The same effect appears inside feature planning. Ask for retention ideas and you often get streaks, badges, reminders, and progress bars. Those tools work sometimes. They stop feeling original when nobody connects them to a specific user fear, job, or context.
Breaking this pattern requires a source of asymmetry. That source can be a neglected audience, an unusual constraint, a hard business model limit, or a piece of field evidence competitors ignore.
Another useful move is to ask for what the category has ignored for too long. Ask the model which customer groups get handled badly because the category optimized for power users, low price, or broad adoption. That question often exposes underserved segments where ideas stop looking interchangeable.
You can also ask for anti-patterns. Which features look attractive in demos and hurt retention later. Which growth loops bring low-quality users. Which copy habits sound polished and erase trust. Anti-pattern prompts create more useful contrast than broad idea prompts.
